Germany: Moseying Down The Mosel

13 Sep 2011

Merzig to Neumagen Dhron (60 Km by Train; 48 Km by Bike)

It’s raining again and I really have to wee but the good news is that we are in Trier and starting the Mosel Cycle Route, after deciding to abandon the Saar and fast forward via a morning train.

Even better yet, as our morning turns to afternoon, the clouds give way to partial sun and the riverside factories to vineyards and villages.  Yes, this Mosel route is kicking into gear and falling into Gina’s “I Can’t Stand It” bucket.  After so many years of traveling (and so much repetition), we know that’s the bucket that is worthy of attention.

The only thing missing from this tranquil afternoon is the pep in my step.  We’ve been cycling for eleven straight days now, covering nearly 500 miles, and I am starting to wonder if I need to join some kind of Union to ensure that I get a day off soon.  Gina is talking of one, her Restless Leg Syndrome having kicked in several nights ago from the cumulative fatigue, but she’s got that darn Rick Steves Germany book out again and whenever that happens, I know my day off the bike won’t be an actual day of rest.  You’ve heard it here before – the 8 mile hikes, the tower climbs, the walking tours – but I know it’s coming and the only question is, in what form will it take this time?  Stay tuned and keep me in your prayers.
