Germany: Good Intentions

Zweibrucken to Merzig (94 Km)

There’s that saying that all good things must come to an end.  I think whoever said that must have had the Saar River cycle route in mind.  Now I know it’s flat and easy to follow and I understand that those qualities alone make it appealing to many cyclists, and normally I would be happy to ride along on that bandwagon for several kilometers, but I have to say that to me, this Saar that we have cycled so far to reach is a sorry sight.  Industrialized and loud and even when the grey turns to green, the sound of that nearby highway is constantly buzzing in my ears.  What a bummer.

That being said, it doesn’t take away from the fact that getting here was beyond lovely and enjoyable and once we hit the Mosel our route is sure to be lovelier still.  And nothing changes the fact that this Germany is one of the best places in the world – if not THE best place in the world – for cycling to our heart’s content.  So good on ya, Germany, for paving that cycling path along the industrialized Saar.  At least your intentions were in the right place.
