Southern Tier: Day 33

There is no better way to characterize today than to call it a “Vashon Day.” This is what we termed those days when we were younger when we used to combine a little bit of activity with a lot of sitting around, shooting the breeze, topics ranging from homework to professors to music to politics to gossip to the laughs (and drinks) we had shared on a Saturday night. The “we” in this case isn’t myself and Gina but instead myself and Darcy, my fellow Vashon Island schoolmate and University of Redlands roommate. Darcy drove up from San Antonio to spend the afternoon touring us around, treating us to lunch, hosting us for a Vashon Day at her lakeside home in Austin, and then topping off the evening by scaring us all with a viewing of the Congress Avenue Bridge bats – all 1.5 million of them emerging at dusk to creepily swoop around our heads and make us wonder if it wouldn’t be better to watch from the car after all.

It was a great reunion and a wonderful treat to spend our Rest Day actually getting some rest, so thank you again, Darcy, for hosting us and we’ll be back in touch soon to book that guest cottage of yours. First stop, St. Augustine Florida, next stop, The Alamo!
